Bose S1 Pro+ vs JBL PartyBox 710 vs Soundboks Gen 4: which speaker to rent in Croatia

Three battery speakers we rent the most. Different size, different volume, different price. Here's the head-to-head — and the one you actually want for your villa, yacht or Zrće week.

You’re renting a sound system for a villa week, yacht trip or Zrće stretch in Croatia. You’ve narrowed it down to three speakers that keep coming up in every blog post and forum thread: Bose S1 Pro+, JBL PartyBox 710, and the Soundboks Gen 4. They all “fill a villa”, they all run on battery, they all cost €85–175 a day to rent — but they are not interchangeable.

We rent all three every week of the Croatian summer. Here’s the honest comparison: where each one wins, where it loses, and which one you should actually book.

Now the why — because the table doesn’t capture which one fits your specific week.

When to rent the Bose S1 Pro+ (€85/day)

Default choice for yacht charters and “we want music but not noise” villa weeks.

The Bose wins on three things that don’t show up on a spec sheet:

  1. It looks the right amount of premium. On a yacht cockpit at sunset, the S1 Pro+ looks like a quality piece of audio kit, not a “battery party speaker.” For Hvar villa weeks with mixed generations, the JBL PartyBox 710 with its built-in light show feels off. The Bose just looks like sound.

  2. 7.2 kg. You can carry it one-handed onto a tender, across a beach, up the villa stairs, into a tuk-tuk. The JBL with its 27 kg + wheels needs paved ground or two people lifting. The Soundboks at 17.5 kg is borderline single-person.

  3. Stereo pairs cleanly. Two S1 Pro+ in stereo (our Yacht Sundowner package at €175/day for the pair) sounds wider, fuller, and more grown-up than any single speaker we rent. The stereo image across a yacht cockpit or villa terrace is the actual reason people upgrade.

Skip the Bose if: you’re throwing a 50-person villa party where the goal is “loud, dance-floor, built-in lights doing their thing.” A single S1 Pro+ runs out of headroom at ~30 people standing around it. That’s when you want the PartyBox or Soundboks.

When to rent the JBL PartyBox 710 (€110/day)

Default choice for villa party nights and Zrće pre-game sessions.

The PartyBox is built for the night you’ve been planning since January. Three things make it the right call:

  1. Built-in lights synced to the music. This is the difference between “we have a speaker playing” and “the room feels like a party.” Strobes, sweeps, color washes — automatically synced to bass kicks. For a 50-person living room or pool deck, it’s the single cheapest way to upgrade the vibe.

  2. Wheels. The 27 kg weight is fine because you don’t carry it — you roll it from the pool to the kitchen to the rooftop. The JBL is the most moveable of the three within a villa footprint.

  3. Two mic inputs onboard. When the speeches happen at the birthday dinner, you don’t need extra gear. Plug a Sennheiser EW-D wireless into channel one, plug the DJ controller into channel two via aux, and you’ve got the full evening covered with no mixer needed.

The PartyBox is mains-capable AND battery-capable — that’s a real advantage for villa weeks. Run it from the wall during the long Saturday-night session, then unplug and roll it down to the pool for the Sunday-afternoon hangover music. The Bose has 11h of battery (more than enough), but the PartyBox lets you forget about battery anxiety entirely for a multi-day villa stretch.

Skip the PartyBox if: you’re on a yacht (too heavy for the side deck), or your vibe is more “premium dinner” than “house party.” The built-in lights are a feature for a Zrće lad-week and a liability for a 50th birthday with the in-laws watching.

When to rent the Soundboks Gen 4 (€175/day)

The right call when you’re outdoors, the crowd is 50+, and “loud enough” is the question.

The Soundboks is the largest battery speaker we rent and it’s not a close second. Three things tip the scales:

  1. 126 dB peak SPL. That’s 12 dB louder than the Bose and roughly the same as the PartyBox — but the Soundboks has a 10-inch woofer + 2× 1-inch tweeters delivering it cleaner. At a beach party, a rooftop event, or a remote villa garden, you can actually fill the space without distortion.

  2. IP65 rating. The most weather-tolerant speaker we rent. Light rain, dust, sand spray, getting splashed by the pool — it handles. For a 5-day beach party in the Pakleni islands or a villa terrace exposed to the sea, the Soundboks is the only one we’d send.

  3. 40-hour battery (at moderate output). It outruns the festival itself. Two days of beach party, no charging in sight, still has juice. This isn’t a number you’ll use often, but on a multi-island yacht hop where you’re not back at a marina for 48 hours, it matters.

The Soundboks pairs (Soundboks-to-Soundboks via the link feature) for big rooftop / pool-deck setups — two of them is a proper PA for 100+ people for €350/day. Cheaper than renting a Mackie Thump rig at this scale and you can move them yourself.

Skip the Soundboks if: your crowd is under 30 people (overkill, no built-in lights to add vibe), or you specifically want music and lighting from one box (Soundboks has no lights — bring a separate LED PAR set for that, €95/day).

Decision matrix — which one for your specific week

Beach party, 30+ people, sand + spraySoundboks Gen 4 (€175/day)
Beach party, 10–20 people, walk-in tender accessBose S1 Pro+ (€85/day)
Indoor 40th / 50th birthday, mixed-age, “elegant” briefBose S1 Pro+ in stereo, ditch the lights (€175/day in stereo)
Festival pre-game in Novalja, Hideout / Defected weekJBL PartyBox 710 + 4× LED PAR uplights (€205/day combined)

What about going cheaper?

If your event is 8–15 people in a smaller villa room and the budget is real, the JBL EON ONE Compact at €65/day does the job. It’s quieter than the Bose and less versatile (no XLR, mono only) but for a hen weekend in a 6-bedroom Trogir villa it’ll cover. Don’t pair them in stereo — they don’t link cleanly.

The Soundboks Go at €115/day is the lighter, quieter Soundboks for groups of 20–40 that want the brand without the full Gen 4 brick. Same IP65 + 40h battery story, lower SPL, lower price.

What you don’t get from any of these — and need to add

All three speakers are mono until you pair (Bose and Soundboks support stereo pairing; PartyBox 710 doesn’t really). None of them are a DJ rig — you’ll need to plug a controller in for that:

  • Pioneer DDJ-FLX4 — €65/day, the default starter controller, USB-powered, no laptop needed if you bring an iPad
  • Pioneer DDJ-REV5 — €180/day, motorised jogs, scratch-DJ favourite, the controller your “I sometimes DJ” mate will recognise

And if you want the proper “looks like a party” treatment without leaning on PartyBox’s built-in lights:
