Bringing vs renting DJ gear in Croatia: power, baggage and the actual maths
You're flying to Split with a controller in a bag, or you're not. Here's the honest version — real weekly rates, 230V Schuko sockets, what a hold does to a jog wheel, and the cases where bringing your own is simply the better call.
You’ve got a week on the coast, a villa or a boat, and at some point in the group chat you became the DJ. So: do you fly your controller out, or rent one when you land?
Most rental companies answer this by pretending renting always wins. It doesn’t. Here’s the version with the numbers in it.
The maths
Our controller rates, straight off the catalog:

The week rate is roughly four and a half days, so a week never costs seven days’ money. That’s the first thing to hold in your head.
The second thing: if you already own a light controller, bring it. An FLX4 is 2.1kg. Renting one for the week is €320 — near enough what the unit costs new. You know your own layout, your mappings are already set, your library is already on the laptop that drives it. Paying €320 to use a stranger’s copy of the thing sitting in your hallway is not a good trade, and we’re not going to tell you otherwise.
Where the sum flips:
- You don’t own one. Obviously rent. Nothing else to work out.
- You own something heavy. A 6kg DDJ-1000 plus its power brick, in a case that protects it, is 8-9kg of your allowance and a hold-baggage decision. €640 for the week starts looking like money well spent.
- You own one and only one. If you’ve got gigs the week after you land back, think hard before putting your only controller through a baggage system. A replacement unit ordered in a panic costs more than the rental did.
- You want something you’d never buy. Nobody flies a 9.3kg XDJ-RX3 on holiday. Renting is the only way that rig ends up on your terrace.
- One gig, one night. A single day on an FLX4 is €65/day plus delivery to your zone. If you own the same box, bringing it wins on cost. Say so out loud before you book anything.
One more line on the ledger: every rental carries a refundable damage hold on your card — €250 on the FLX4, €400 on the DDJ-1000, €500 on the REV5. It comes back, but it’s tied up for the week.
Power: 230V, 50Hz, Type C and Type F
Croatia runs 230V at 50Hz, with Type C and Type F (Schuko) sockets. Two round pins.
- Coming from the UK. Your voltage already matches. You need a physical plug adapter for the Type G plug, nothing more. Bring two — one for the controller, one for the laptop charger, because you will need both at once and the villa will have exactly one free socket behind the sofa.
- Coming from the US or Canada. Read the label on your power brick before you pack it. Most modern DJ power supplies are printed
100-240V ~ 50/60Hz, which means a plug adapter is all you need. If yours says 120V only, a plug adapter will not save it — plugging it into 230V is how you end up with a dead controller on day one. At that point, rent. - USB-bus-powered controllers dodge this entirely. The FLX4 and DDJ-FLX2 draw power from the laptop or phone. Your laptop charger still has to reach a Croatian socket, so you’re not free of the adapter — just of the second one.
- There may be no socket at all. Terraces, boats at anchor, beach setups. If that’s your booth, mains-powered gear is the wrong answer regardless of who owns it — the battery-powered Denon Prime Go+ exists for exactly that, on request with a 5-7 day lead time.
Baggage: hold, cabin, and what actually breaks
Cabin is the answer whenever the controller fits. A 2.1kg controller in a padded bag is an easy carry-on in principle — but size and weight limits vary by airline, by fare class, and sometimes by aircraft. Check your specific carrier’s current policy before you commit to it. Do not plan a week around a rule someone posted on a forum in 2019.
If it’s going in the hold, understand what you’re risking. It isn’t usually loss. It’s a corner drop onto concrete: jog wheel platters knocked out of true, a snapped pitch fader, RCA and XLR jacks pushed back into the board. A soft gig bag is padding, not protection. A flight case is protection and is also several more kilos of allowance.
Ask your airline directly. Their answer is the only one that counts at the gate.
Customs and import: what we’re not going to tell you
Croatia is in the EU and in the Schengen area. That’s the last confident sentence we’ll write on this.
Whether you owe anything on gear you carry in, what paperwork applies, and whether a border officer treats your controller as personal kit or as equipment for paid work depends on where you’re flying from, your residency, and what you’re doing here. We rent equipment; we’re not qualified to advise you on your border, and a wrong answer here costs you real money or your gear. Check the current Croatian customs guidance and ask your airline.
What renting locally actually solves
- It arrives where you are. Doorstep delivery to a villa or marina address in any zone we cover. Same-day in Split if you reserve before 11am; other zones run a 3-5 day lead time so we can route the van.
- Nothing you own goes in a hold. Your controller stays at home, unbroken.
- No adapter roulette. Everything we send is already on Croatian mains with the cables in the box.
- Something fails and there’s someone to call. Not a promise of a same-hour swap — we’re a small operation driving out of Split — but the difference between a problem with a phone number attached and a dead box in a foreign villa.

So, decide
Bring your own if you own a light controller, you know it, and you’re happy to carry it on. Rent if you don’t own one, if yours is heavy or precious, if you want a rig above your own shelf, or if you simply don’t want to spend the flight thinking about it.
